Food poisoning outbreak at Mosul camp leaves two dead and hundreds critically ill
A woman and child die and at least 300 people are critically ill after eating an evening meal at the desert camp.
A mass outbreak of food poisoning has killed two people and left hundreds critically ill at a desert camp for displaced Iraqis.
More than 750 people were affected, with at least 200
sent to hospitals by the food poisoning that left them vomiting and
suffering severe dehydration.A woman and child have died, Iraqi minister Adila Hamoud said.
At least 300 people remain in critical condition, she added.
The outbreak happened after an evening meal provided by a charity at the Hassan Sham U2 camp near Mosul.
Medics were still treating patients - mostly young children - in a tent on the edge of the camp on Tuesday afternoon.
Symptoms included vomiting and severe dehydration
The food was meant for an iftar, which Muslims use to break the daily Ramadan fast, and contained beans, rice, chicken and a yoghurt drinks, the Rudaw news agency said.
It was brought from a restaurant in nearby Erbil, breaking a ban on organisations bringing food into the camp, the agency added.
Rudaw also reported that the restaurant owner had been since
"We have no evidence yet. Again, we don't know where the contamination happened, whether it was in the packaging, in the preparation, in the transportation."
The camp east of Mosul is home to more than 6,000 people amid a US-backed Iraqi offensive to dislodge IS militants from the city.
