Does Nigeria's Dangote Play Dirty?

Abdulsamad Rabiu, the Executive Chairman/CEO of BUA Group, has written to President Muhammadu Buhari, complaining of the alleged sabotage tactics used by the Dangote Group to elbow competiton out of the way, while also accusing the mining ministry of favouring the Dangote Group in transactions.

There is no end in sight in the feud between Dangote Group and Bua Group over ownership of Mining Lease No. 2541, located in a boundary town of Oguda/Ubo in Okene Local Government of Kogi State.
While the management of Dangote Group over the weekend accused BUA of engaging in illegal mining of limestone deposit in its site, BUA on the other hand accused Dangote in collaboration with The Ministry of Mines and Steel of forcefully claiming ownership of the controversial mining site.
Executive Director of Dangote, Mr Devakumar Edwin yesterday frowned upon the 'media war', instigated by BUA against the Dangote Group, over a matter already pending before the Federal High Court, Benin Division.
Edwin said: "Dangote Group validly acquired its interest and mining title in the disputed Mining Lease No. 2541 from AICO Ado Ibrahim & Company Ltd sometime in 2014 and the ministry approved the deal.

He said BUA in its process in Court acknowledged that these 'illegal mining' leases which it claimed were granted in 1997 were temporary mining leases.
Meanwhile the ruling Atta Omadivi Family of Okene in Kogi State have added their voice to the conflict in a statement issued over the weekend.
A statement by Prince Mahmoud Atta on behalf of the Atta family expressed disdain over the ministry's conclusion in a publication stating that suit FHC/LK/CS/25/2017 between Alhaji Mohammed Otaru Adeika & Ors. Versus AICO Ado Ibrahim and Company Limited, Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel, The Mining Cadestre Office and Dangote Industries Plc pending in Federal High Court in Lokoja will determine who owns the contentious site.
Prince Atta wonders why the ministry has special interest in Dangote to 'openly and illegally' bequeath them ML2541 under contention in competent Court, describing the act as tantamount to contempt of the court.
Stressing that the court had ordered that no one can claim ownership of ML2541, Atta said neither Aico nor Dangote owns ML2541 as wrongly declared by the ministry adding that the mining lease remains non transferable until the suit was determined.

Equatorial Guinea to Join OPEC, Pledges to Advance Interests of African Oil Producers

Vienna, May 25, 2017 – Equatorial Guinea will join OPEC, it was announced at an historic meeting of global oil producers in Vienna May 25. The Central African oil and gas producer will be Sub-Saharan Africa’s fourth OPEC member, bringing a wealth of experience and African diplomatic reach to the global oil exporters’ club.
Oil producers worldwide, including 11 non-OPEC members, joined together in December 2016 to agree on 1.8 million barrels per day of production cuts that would successfully stabilize the oil price in 2017. H.E. Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima, Minister of Mines and Hydrocarbons of Equatorial Guinea, was a leading voice in the calls for unity among exporting nations. Equatorial Guinea applied for OPEC membership in January, with the Minister announcing his intention to join the bloc by the end of the year.
“Equatorial Guinea’s joining of OPEC is a triumph. This is a proud moment for us,” said H.E. Gabriel Mbaga Obiang Lima. “There has never been a more important time to stand together and it is our honour to stand with OPEC as a positive force in global energy. We will use this platform to advance the interests of all African oil and gas explorers and producers and all OPEC members.”
The oil price rallied this morning on the expectation of an extension of the deal to limit output by nine months or more. Equatorial Guinea’s share of production cuts over the last six months is 12,000 barrels per day.
Equatorial Guinea is Sub-Saharan Africa’s third biggest oil producer and has one of the region’s most dynamic energy sectors. In 2017 work will begin on two landmark projects: Fortuna FLNG, Africa’s first floating liquefied natural gas plant; and the Bioko Oil Terminal, the largest crude oil and petroleum products storage facility in West and Central Africa. The Minister will present information on these projects, as well as Equatorial Guinea’s accession to OPEC and the conclusion of the EG Ronda 2016 bidding round, to investors at the Africa Oil & Power 2017 conference in Cape Town on June 5-7.
