Cameroon – South West: Basic Education Minister’s motorcade kills a young girl
The tragedy that occurred on
Tuesday, June 13, 2017 in the Mbonguè village on the Buea-Kumba axis in
the South-West region, provoked the wrath of the populations. These set
fire to several rooms of the local government school.
The Minister of Basic Education Youssouf Hadidja Alim was in the South-West region for a tour in a few exam centers of the Certificat d’Etude Primaire and the First School Living Certificate. Objective to ensure that these examinations are carried out correctly.
On the way to the town of Kumba, this
program of work was soon turned upside down, when one of the vehicles
that accompanied the minister hit a student of the class of CE1 (class
3) Mbongue. The 7-year-old Beckline was reported to have crossed the
road at speed as the procession passed. She died on the spot.
The incident provoked the wrath of the
populations in Mbonguè. Already irritated by the anglophone crisis, they
did not hesitate to express their anger by setting fire to several
buildings of the local government school. An inquiry into this act would
have been opened.
The Minister of Basic Education Youssouff
Hadidja Alim was obliged to interrupt her working visit to take part in
a crisis meeting in the SDO’s office of the Meme division. She also
went to the child’s family and spoke with her parents. She promised to
give her full support to this family once the funeral program is fixed.
The remains of the little Bekline were deposited in the morgue of the Kumba district hospital.
