Cameroon Journal, Yaounde – Some top political elite of the South West Region have told the Head of State Paul Biya to “instruct government to accelerate the process of putting in place the various institutions of the 1996 constitution” which have been neglected in the last 20 years.

Most provisions in the 1996 constitution such as the putting in place of the Constitutional Council, Regional Councils, the Court of Impeachment, and the declaration of assets by public office holders, remain to be put in place by Biya.

In a statement issued Thursday January 19, after a meeting in Yaounde, the elite who styled themselves as “Living Forces” of the South West also called on Anglophone teachers to call off their strike so that parents can send back their children to school. Schools in the two Anglophone Regions have remained closed since November 21, 2016.

The meeting, the elite said, came on the heels of weeks of unrest in the Region “characterized by disruptive actions by negative forces leading to the non resumption of classes and generalized fear.”

The attendees of the Yaounde meeting who said they were not doing so under the banner of the South West Elite Association, SWELA, resolved amongst other things, to “condemn vehemently all acts of violence, destruction, intimidation, and threats meted out by negative forces on the peace-loving and hospitable people of the South West Region particularly the innocent school children.”

To them, “the civil and political rights of citizens to strike should in no way endanger the fundamental economic and social rights, especially the right to education.”

The elite, after appealing to the Head of State and his government to do everything possible to ensure the security and safety of parents, teachers and the school children on school campuses, also said they reaffirm their “unflinching support to the Head of State and his government to continue his constitutional approach to putting a stop to the negative forces in order for peace, law and order to reign for the smooth resumption of classes in the Region.”

Another pressing concern raised was their appeal to President Biya and his government to “expedite action on the setting up of the national entity to consolidate our national unity and living together in the spirit of the architects of our reunification.”

They concluded by inviting “all residents of the South West, their origins notwithstanding, to respect the traditions and legitimate aspirations of the South West people with regard to the unity and indivisibility of the state, peace, respect for the institutions of the republic and the right to education of the children as well as to ensure peaceful cohabitation in the Region.”

The statement was signed by 64 persons, most of them Senators, members of the National Assembly and members of government. The meeting was chaired by Senator Peter Mafany Musonge.
